is a masters in psychology from an online univ less crediable? could i still get my docorate w that masters?
I was interested in getting my Masters in Psychology from an online univ. I am just a little worried that it's not accepted by employers or nationally by the psychology board so if I want to go on to get my doctorates degree it wouldn't be recognized. Help!

i think it would be better to get your masters degree at a credible university.

2
You are right, places like University of Phoenix, though accredited, don't have diplomas that carry much weight when looking for employment. Definitely less credible.

3
You don't need a masters to get a phd. But getting an online masters would not help your cause at all..

Anyways you should go for psychology. There are numerous options are available in psychology like therapy, human factors, and research. You should go for your specialized field in which you can use your expertise. You can also do some additional ceu courses of psychology for great remuneration. But It should be done from an accredited and authorised course provider.

I think I answered the other question too. After a BA it takes about 2 to 3 years to work through a Master's program. A doctoral degree takes about 4-5. If you are considering what you want to do after completing your undergraduate degree I recommend finding some professionals in your area with varying degrees, and see what their career is like so you can make an informed decision, rather than just relying on what takes the least amount of time.

2
It's 2 years for a Master's in psychology, counseling, social work, or Marriage and family therapy.

3
You'll have to graduate with honours or close to honours with good relationships with your professors to even be considered for a msters program. The programs can anywhere from six months to ten years. They usually take about two years, but that is usually only the case if you study full-time. Masters degrees involve courses, but not always. How long it takes depends on how long it takes you to defend a thesis successfully. The someone who told you that is right by the way. It is possible.

Youth counselors are needed on a routine basis at children's group homes and they pay pretty well. You may or may not actually do sit-down therapy, but you'll offer guidance and monitor behavior. Chemical Dependency Technician- They monitor clients, do intake chemical assessments, and offer support as needed. Customer Service jobs: Banks, Collection Agencies, etc.

You can teach, do research and work on getting your LPC. You might just want to continue on for your PhD.

2
You can help the police to solve crimes.

4
Like you said counseling is the big thing. But there is also school psychologists, teaching psych. to college students, and you could proabably get a job doing social work. For almost any position you have to be licensed & in my state pass Praxsius 1 & 2. Look through the job ad's and see what most jobs require.

5
you can be a forensic psychologist and help the cops solve crimes =))

6
If the master's degree you're thinking of is in general psych, there really won't be much that you can do with that degree, other than put the knowledge you gain to work in a retail or business setting. The Ph.D. is the entry level degree in psychology (as opposed to counseling, where the entry level degree is the master's). With only a master's degree and without a clinical focus (again, as you would get in a counseling, marriage and family therapy or social work degree), you just have advanced knowledge in the field of general psychology. If you're interested in working in the field, I would recommend that you find a way to fit the internships into your experience. There are a number of programs where you can go part-time and get a degree in counseling. Make sure that the program you are looking at is "regionally accredited." An example would be accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (www.sacscoc.org).

Many people think you need to have a Phd to do anything such as private practice in psychology. They are misinformed. Sometimes it is best to have a masters degree unless you are looking to do clinical/research work, which is not your case. The difference between having a phd and a masters degree.. Masters: way less school. Periodic supervised meetings (usually once a week or once a month, just to check in and make sure everything is going well) PhD: More school. More pay however insurance companies for some reason are more likely to reimburse a masters degree. Phds typically only make on average $7 more per session. Unless you are practicing in an area like L.A. or New York.

What can I do with a masters in psychology besides counseling

What can I do with a masters in psychology besides counseling?
Hello. I just got my bachelors in psychology and I'm not sure whether I should continue to a masters program. I found studying psychology interesting but I'm not really sure that I would enjoy it as a profession. Also does anyone know what I could do with a masters in psychology besides traditional counseling and teaching? The others things that I'm interested in are literature and philosphy but really the only thing I could do with that is teach and I don't want to be limited.

You make it sound as if teaching is limited, which it is not. I suggest you look in the library at the Occupational Outlook Handbook that is put out yearly. It describes many different professions, what education you'll need, salary, etc. Look up Psychology and see what is listed, I think you will be surprised. You can go into research, teach, counsel, social work, etc., etc. I strongly suggest you choose what you love to do and what interests you over money.

It's good to hear you're taking to time to seriously consider different options - most psychology majors go to grad school or just get any position that's available..... There are several "non-traditional" positions I would recommend looking into - all of these positions require either a master's or doctorate in psychology and do NOT entail counseling or teaching. In the order that I think you might want to consider them, based on demand in industry/# of jobs available: #1: Organizational psychologist: This is what I do. I assess performance and assist people with different issues in the workplace - and it is SO not counseling - it's coaching, which involves coming up with a plan for change. The job also involves survey research - sometimes - but there are some interesting positions in this field. #2: Human factors psychologist: This is a psychologist who is also an engineer - and is paid very well. The job involves designing spaces appropriate for human occupation and interaction, such as office spaces and airplane cockpits. VERY hot field right not. #3: Forensic psychologist: Yes, they have to go through the therapy training, but they work with incarcerated felons, helping them acquire the necessary skills to reenter society. I know a lot of people who enter this profession, and they've all enjoyed it. #4: Quantitative psychologist: This is also called an experimental psychologist. And you have to LOVE psychologist to be one. I doubt you'd dig this - but if you do, this would involve conducting psychological experiments. #5: Psychobiologist: Studying the behavior and thought processes of animals - usually works in a University laboratory. Cool stuff. #6: Community psychologist: They have many community psychology programs, but I'm doubting they have community psychology in practice - except for community relations positions in government (which is fun work). Very interesting field though! And there are other fields as well - development psychology, sensation and perception psychology, social psychology - but these are "academic/teaching fields" for the most part. Hope this helps! :) P.S. - Don't rule out academic positions that don't involve teaching, such as those in writing centers. Check out www.chronicle.com and go to the careers section for academic jobs - most require a master's degree....they have TONS of very interesting academic positions....

What can I do with a masters degree in psychology

What can I do with a masters degree in psychology?
I am hoping to get a career that would require masters in psychology. However, the company I hope to work for is very picky and it is very difficult to be accepted. What kind of careers could I get with a masters in psychology, should being hired by said company not go so well? I would go for the PsyD or PhD, but I come from a pretty low income family and it'll be a miracle if I can afford to get through my masters. I'd need some serious scholarships to get through grad school.

Real estate, security, sales, etc. Psycholgy is still very general; with a teaching certificate you could teach just about anything anywhere. Be confidant.

2
You could become a counselor or look into government jobs(state and federal) where you'll be dealing with the public(they'll like the psych degree). Sales, jury selection consultant to law firms, career counselor.

3
Go for your PhD or PsyD. I have a BA in psych and there is nothing out here for anything less than a doctor. If it were possible for me to continue schooling right now that's what I'd be doing.

4
With a master's degree in Psychology or probably better yet, Community or Applied Psychology, you could eventually take your board exams and become a licensed counselor. You could even specialize in marriage and family therapy, chemical dependency counseling, rehabilitative counseling, school and vocational counseling, or just the general area. Usually, these programs will not be listed on the graduate bulletin under the psychology heading; they usually fall under Human Services, Community Counseling, or Applied Psychology headings, but all are masters degree programs and have a nice starting/entry level salary. If you would like to become a clinical psychologist or researcher, that will require a Ph.D or Psy. D, there is just no getting around that with those types of careers. If you want to do therapy and counsel clients, than the other routes I mentioned previously will get you there and will allow you to finish at a faster rate.

5
What would you like to do with your degree when you are done with your Master's: work in business, do research, work in the schools, or be a therapist/counselor? You have to answer this question before you can really choose a Master's program. Business = Industrial/Organizational Psychology, Schools = School Psychology, Therapist/Counselor = Community or Clinical Psychology or a Counseling Masters, Research = any of the above or social or experimental psychology. Also, many Master's programs offer graduate assistantships that pay your tuition for you working part time hours in a position on campus. However, you would have to go to school full-time to get one of these. I made it through my school psychology program with a 20 hour grad assistantship plus working part time outside of school. Good luck!

How high in math do I need to go to get a master's degree in psychology so I can become a therapist

How high in math do I need to go to get a master's degree in psychology so I can become a therapist?
I've heard a lot I need Statistics but to get my AA-DTA (transfer degree from a community college) it says I only have to know math 99, intermediate algebra. Do i need like math 112, college level math once i transfer to a 4 year? Is it usually a general graduation requirement for a master's degree in psychology?

the math to fulfill the general requirement and statistics but stats isn't really hard its a lot of spreadsheet easy stuff.

2
To be a masters level therapist, you really want a Masters in Social Work, not psychology. An MSW is more of a qualification than a MA in Psychology, you can take insurance more easily as an MSW, etc. You're getting ahead of yourself right now. Take the math class your community college requires now. Once you transfer, talk to your advisor and see if you need any more math classes.

3
You can go to the web site of the college that you're transferring to and check the requirements for your major.

You need to shoot for a doctoral degree program in clinical psychology if you want to do counseling. If you just want to do psychology research then you still need to do a doctoral degree but it need not be in clinical psych. Although psych grad programs take people outside of psychology majors, the majority are bio or other scientific majors who come from programs that emphasize research. Hence, your undergrad degree wouldn't really impressive anyone and likely make it difficult to do unless you spend some time doing undergrad work in psych classes first. If you want to do counseling, you may want to consider social work. MSW programs will allow you to counsel and are far shorter and easier to complete than clinical psych programs.

If I first get a Master's in psychology, how many years would it then take to get a PhD

If I first get a Master's in psychology, how many years would it then take to get a PhD? ?
Pepperdine University does not offer a PhD in clinical psychology, but they do offer a master's. If I got a master's at Pepperdine (which takes two years), then applied elsewhere for my PhD, would the PhD program be 2 years shorter than it would be if I did not get the master's?
Higher Education (University +) - 3 Answers

It depends on the school and the program, and your ability to get through the program. You should be able to it in 3-4 years, as you wouldn't have to take all the academic coursework. Start looking at PhD programs NOW so you don't have to lose any courses. That way you can take your comps earlier and get to the dissertation and clinical training.

2
Some Universities set up their PhD programs so that you have to apply for the complete degree, not step by step. The reason is they don't want to waste time with people who aren't going all the way. For example you wouldn't be able to just apply to the Masters program at such univerities you would have to apply for the PhD program of the bat. With that being said, it is all the same amount of time. If you were in a PhD program from the begging you would still get your Masters degree along the way. So you really aren't saving or losing time by doing one or the other. So the answer is it will take you 2 years approx. from time you complete Masters.

3
A PhD program is generally separate from a Masters. I had a 2 year M.A. degree in psychology & it made no difference in the Ph.D. course requirements. It will probably take 4-5 years for your Ph.D. My Ph.D. (Educational Psychology), had 3 years of course work and a year's internship. Then, it took me a year to write my dissertation. Some people can do the internship & dissertation simultaneously (I found it difficult with my long commute & a child at home). Once you get started, you usually have 10 years to complete the dissertation after you've attained Ph.C. status (Candidate). But, that may depend on the university & program you're in.

Here are some ideas: 1) Review visualization techniques that are used to enhance sports performance 2) Do sports help or hinder children's mental health and/or social skills? 3) Program evaluation of different sports activities, groups or programs 4) What are the pros and cons of young athletes skipping vs. completing college before going on to pro sports? 5) What kinds of sports programs help those (either adults or children) with physical or developmental disabilities? (e.g. Special Olympics) 6) What kinds of athletic or gym or exercise programs help adults (or children) with physical problems such as obesity, high blood pressure or diabetes? How to increase adherence in sport activities? 7) Review the NFL and sports injuries (concussions, high rate of depression and anxiety later in life, etc) and their controversial disabilities programs Good luck!!!

Can I master in something I didnt bachelor in

Can I master in something I didnt bachelor in?
Im going into college next year as a freshman. Im having a hard time deciding what to major in. If I major in aviation and minor in neuroscience, can I then pursue a masters in psychology as a graduate? Or do I need to take psychology classes as an undergraduate?
Higher Education (University +) - 4 Answers

Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :

This varies by discipline, but as far as I know, you can't get a master's degree in psychology without having gotten a bachelor's in psychology anywhere.

2
It's possible to get a masters in a different subject than your bachelors. Generally, the masters program will have to review your case and may require additional undergraduate coursework or may reject you. I personally wouldn't worry so much. You don't have to decide on your major right away. You can take some courses in psychology and aviation and see what you like better. There are lots of opportunities for change.

3
I've seen psy majors at the BA level switch to MS in science. What the student has to do depends on the school & department, but count on having to make up the key major classes from the undergraduate program that you missed before you can advance at the masters level. Psychology isn't likely to give you a very deep education in the math & physical sciences. Have you considered a major in neuroscience with a minor in psychology and a heavy, undeclared emphasis in aviation?

4
Some masters programs (MBA, MLS, most humanities) don't require a background in the field to enter the program - you can major in anything. But the science, math, and engineering grad programs, of which psychology is one, expects, if not a major, then significant coursework in the field. They're not starting over at the beginning in the masters program, it's advanced coursework in that field assuming quite a bit of prior knowledge.

you should know better if you study psychology ,that it doesn't matter what you do ,if you do it well and get to the top you will fix your own salary

2
Any type of education is argued to be an investment, and its dividends are not necessarily financial ones. You have a lot more lattitude in choosing employment with a Master's than an undergrad that will be in the field. Depending on the industry, you salary will differ. If you enter educational psychology, the pay would be a little less than if you entered the business sector as an HR specialist (given you do an MSc in I/O). Experience is seen as just as important, so while the starting salary may be modest, if you do your job well, you will see higher increases over time. I thing I always recommend to incoming Master's students: take multivariate statistics. This differentiates you from someone with an MA, and many employers look for performance measurement, implementing new programs and evaluating them, etc. It's worthwhile.

3
There are limited jobs you can get with a master's in psychology. Some states won't even license you for private practice. But mental health jobs pay by the job not by the degree, i.e. if a BA and MA are doing the same job, they get the same pay. You can get some salary information for different parts of the country here: www.salary.com

That depends on the school you are wanting to attend for graduate work. If you visit the school's website it should provide you with their GPA requirements for admission.

2
Sullen Riot gave you the correct answer. Each university and college has a student handbook, often which is reproduced on a website, that gives their recommendations and requirements for students. You should check there.

3
Most grad schools require at least a 3.0 (B average) for admission, so your GPA is not bad. However, some more competitive programs may want something higher, check the school's website to see if they post their requirements or stats of last year's acceptances. Good luck!

would studying psychology be good

would studying psychology be good?
guys don't you think that mastering psychology at an early age puts one at great advantage? cos as long as you know how the mind works, many things will be under your control. moreover, there're different fields of psychology thus you can apply it in different aspects of your life. what do you think?

I think you are absolutely right.

2
No, you're a little bit wrong. Don't forget that psychologists also are people. So they also have their personal life problems, which don't depends on them sometimes. Psychology is not a kind of magic to manage your personal life successfully. They also have their own psychologists (mostly colleagues), when they feels hard after a hard day when they have heard so much heavy problems.

3
Studying psychology will only leave you with a $55,000 a yr job and a mountain of student loan debt. If you want to stick with psychology, at least get your Phd in it.

4
Not so sure about "they guys", or the "early age" part of your question but psych is a fascinating subject, and yes it does have many applications in life if you are also mentally healthy. All the knowledge in the world won't help a person unless they also strive for their own mental health. Reading on the topic will help you if you are considering studies in psyche; might start with some of the "primers," and move on from there...to look into different aspects of the study. Enjoy!

5
Understanding psychology won't necessarily merit you with the tools to further control your own psyche... it is a HUGE field and how you apply it to your life depends on what part of it you learn. Learning about parts of the brain is essential for doctors, mental illnesses ties in with psychotherapy and criminal mind, child and developmental psychology is good for a day care setting or child psychologist, and theres a lot more. Psychology is a great thing to get involved in... I've myself taken 2 years and it has completely changed my outlook, but I can't say it has changed my person at all. I guess I can look at someone who is angry and in a way evaluate it.. I know the anger is center in their amygdala and I know until the irritating stimuli is removed they will continue to be angry until they let it slip from their mind... but I can't say it really helps me everyday. It doesn't however open up numerous doors to expand in careers or the higher learning.

6
i agree. but it is true, you wont be able to solve your own problems, nor those who you are very close to because whether you realise it or not, you are emotionally attached to them and will have a bit of bias in your opinions and diagnosis. im so studying psychology! :D

Should I pursue a major in Psychology? A master's?
I am a junior in high school and am very interested in going into the Psychology field. So far, Developmental Psychology sounds best, but I've just begun learning. Any advice from those who are working towards/have already obtained a Masters in the field or higher? Is there a big need for Psychologists like there is for nurses?

I don't know much at all on the subject, but I was doing a google search on the topic not long ago and found this website, although I don't know if it will help. http://www.jobfutures.ca/noc/4151.shtml It's on psychologists.

Psych is the fastest growing medical field today. As for a degree, it depends. Do you want to do research or teach? Then get a Phd. Do you want to open a private practise? Then a Masters is fine. You can also choose to work as a social worker (Masters of Social Work) or for state mental health system (BA with Phych emphasis). Or you can go into the medical field with a degree in Psychiatry (you have to get a BA and then go to med school for this). Good luck!

4
In my experience, only a Ph.D in Psych allows you to do anything other than testing, etc. You need clinical experience to do therapy...I got an MA in Guidance and Counseling in '74, got a lot of clinical training and got to work with very troubled adolescents, young women and guys, for 21 yrs. VERY rewarding work!!!

How many years does it take to get a Master's in Psychology?

It depends. It takes a MINIMUM of two years, but for most people it can take three or four. Psychology is not your run-of-the-mill Masters program. It depends a lot on what school you go into, what you focus on, whether you take summer classes, and your own work ethic. What is more, the Masters degree in Psychology has lost a lot of value over the years. You may find yourself going after that doctoral degree in the end, and then you can slap on another three to five years. But if that is what you like to do, it is a great career and well worth it. Good luck!

2
A masters usually takes 2 years after you finish your BA (about 3-4 years)

3
Well assuming you finish your undergrad degree in about 4 years, a masters usually takes about 2 more after that.

4
have a bachelor's degree; complete at least a master's degree in psychology (2-3 years); complete an internship if you do counseling; pass a licensing exam if you do counseling; Some psychologists have just a master's degree. If you are an industrial-organizational psychologist this is the required degree in the field. For most other types of psychologists, a master's degree prepares you to be an assistant, but not the lead research or counselor. Clinical and counseling psychology students complete an internship while in school. As an intern, you work with clients and an experienced psychologist supervises your work. Internships last from one to two years depending on the degree you are earning. An internship is usually required to become a licensed psychologist. Employers require educational psychologists to have at least a master's degree and have completed a one-year internship. Most industrial/organizational psychologists need a master's degree.

Petowner psychology!! Master or Slave

Petowner psychology!! Master or Slave?
While chatting with a friend about which dog I would like to have as a pet, he commented,"People who want dogs, like to be masters. People who get cats end up serving them." I know a dog owner who sits for hours in a cramped position because her lab has gone to sleep on her knee. Doesn't sound too masterful to me. But what do you think?

Your friend is right in a joking sense, but we are usually the ones who become very wrapped up in our animals. We should be the master no matter what animal we have a pet. It makes the relationship more harmonious.

Go to apa.org You can read info about I/O careers, including salary. You will make much more money with a graduate degree in I/O...most go on for their Ph.D. to obtain positions with corporations though. It is extremely rewarding. (retired IBM exec mgr/confidential labs/psychology professor)

2
I have my MLIS, and I absolutely love my job. I enjoy helping people find the information that they need. For me, it's the best job in the world. Unfortunately, librarian positions tend to (as a general rule - there are exceptions) be on the lower end of the pay scale. There is also a growing trend in many libraries to hire librarians as part time employees. You can check with a site like www.salary.com to see what librarian and I/O psychology positions are paying in your area. Good luck whatever you decide! Everyone should love what they do! :)

The desire is good. But if you have that low of a GPA in your undergrad, you will be hard pressed to get into a good Maters school. No PhD program will look at anything less than a 3.5 and usually even then you are at the bottom of the list.

2
Forget psychoanalytical training; it's not offered in graduate programs, is largely passe', and of little if any use. Most doctoral programs will not have a terminal master's degree, and you certainly don't need a master's to enter a doctoral program. A MA in psychology in some states will allow you to becomes licensed as a mental health counselor, and thus to provide therapy. Other states, however, have no such license and you'd find work in a state facility and that's about it. Almost any state university will have a good master's in psychology, so do lots of private universities. If you can narrow down your interest, find out how's doing research in that area, and then find out where they teach, you might find some more specific direction.

'Best' is relevant. Look at licensing requirements where you want to practice after school. Does the state where you want to practice require APA accreditation? And what do you want to specialize in? Start looking at state schools, and then look at schools listed on APA.org, followed by other schools. Look at the school requirements. You may need to take the GRE or another standardized test. You also need to ensure you meet the other requirements, such as GPA and required courses.

I would say the female serial killer, because they are rare. The only problem is, that your degree is with industry. So, I guess it would have to do with the employees. 1) why do they choose this job? 2) What kind of personality wants to do this sort of work? 3) Where did they get the idea of doing this kind of work? 4) When did they decide to do this work? What motivated them? Was it their parents? Did the parents have this same sort of job? Or was it because it was maybe the best paying job around? If it involves toxic chemicals in industry, maybe these employees have a higher level of risk-taking than the average person. Maybe industrial espionage would be the most interesting subject. Other companies hire "moles" to ferret out information about other companies, so they can get ahead. Maybe that line would be best. You might even be able to tie that in with organized crime. But be careful if you do, you don't know who's involved in THAT.

I have a master's in psychology -actually a specialist degree which is above a masters and allows me to be licensed -that being said, a regular master's degree does not lead to licensure, which means that you will have to work under a licensed psychologist. All setting use ABA to some degree -you do not have to have a specialty to work in those settings and use ABA. However, the addiction counseling is more specialized and would make you a rarer commodity so to speak. I think that would lead to more job security.

Hello, I have a master's in Behavior Analysis. Basically with Behavior Analysis or Applied Behavior Analysis, if you are looking at being a practitioner, you will be working, most likely in one of 2 areas. The first is in the area of autism and developmental disabilities, and the second is OBM (organizational behavior management). Those of us who specialize in autism/developmental disabilities usually end up working in schools or privately as consultants or therapists or in a privately owned clinic or center. I personally work in a privately owned center that services children with autism spectrum disorders. Behavior Analysts specializing in OBM typically work for organizations, offering advice and interventions to maximize employee productivity, improve safety conditions, and other tasks related to improving the organization through increasing or decreasing employees' behavior. A GREAT resource for learning more about applied behavior analysis and what job opportunities are available to you is Chapter 30 of a textbook titled Principles of Behavior. The chapter is available for free on the author's website: http://dickmalott.com/booksarticles/pbe6/webchapters/chapter30.pdf That chapter led me to choosing the right grad program. I hope it helps you too!

I want to be accepted into a School Psychology Master's Program

I want to be accepted into a School Psychology Master's Program....?
I have read the minimum requirements for admission. Here they are: - 2.5 on last 30 hours or 2.75 overall GPA - a minimum of 750 on the GRE - recommendation letters and letter of intent... so forth and so on. - required classes - experimental, stats, intro, etc. I have taken all of the required classes. I have a 3.94 GPA. I recieved a 930 (the first time) on the GRE. I spoke with someone over the admitting process and said that they usually accept 12-15 out of approx. 50 applicants. What do you think the odds are of me getting accepted - with the current GRE score and GPA? I have a bachelor's in Sociology with a 3.6 program GPA and I have a minor in Psychology with a 4.0 program minor GPA. I appreciate it!

You would be Paula whatever. You don't get an academic title untill you earn a doctors degree. Thats a PhD, MD, Psy.D, Ed.D etc. Bachelors and masters have no titles.

4
Paula, Once again if a title is all you are looking for in psychology, then you probably need to focus your studies on something else..Helping others is the reason most people go on to study this discipline and then they would go on to have patients with mental/emotional issues, as in counselling and therapy...There is no title until you have a PHD Doctorate behind you, which is lots of years of university...

it may be appropriate to follow one's name with MA or MS, if in an academic or professional setting

of course you are going to need TOEFL, and I guess a GMAT, too. The only way to enter to graduate school is to study for a little while to prove them that you can manage graduate school. This is what I did.

2
Yes you do anybody who garaduated in a non-english speaking cirriculum has to do the TOEFL or another acceptable english proficiency test. Unless you can show them you did a number of english courses then you might not have to do it. Also you might have to take the GRE or the GMAT.

3
If you have lived long enough in the US, and I am guessing you have lived atleast 2-3 years. You should not have to take TOEFL. Talk to the University admissions department you are interested in to confirm this. They will give you an answer pretty soon(about a couple of days). Even if you have to take TOEFL, it's not that hard. It's to test that you can understand and converse in US english. It's about everyday spoken US english, so you should pass it comfortably with little or no preparation. Good luck!!

Well, you know it's an online program. Is that what you want? Once you have your degree in psychology, what do you want to be doing? If you want to do clinical work, you have to do a clinical practicum of something like 3000 hours. You would want to make sure that whatever your final objective, the university is equipped to direct you and assist you in real time--some things cannot be done online. This link talks about the accreditation, which is extremely important: http://www.phoenix.edu/about_us/accreditation.html But call them. Make an appointment to talk to someone about what your goals are and whether or not they are equipped to help you meet them. That aside, if I were to choose an online degree program, I would prefer a university like UCLA. Schools are like brands--some brands carry a lot more credibility than others. Here is a discussion of that issue on Answers.com: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_the_national_ranking_of_the_University_of_Phoenix This is an important article because it points out some of the advantages vs. disadvantages of University of Phoenix.

2
UoP is a very expensive option, and it is, for a range of reasons, not highly regarded in business and among other universities. Therefore, I would urge you to look at alternatives. I would firstly focus on earning the bachelor's degree in psychology and then consider where to study for your master's. If you need online options. You might want to look at Excelsior College http://www.excelsior.edu , Peru State College ( very low fees) http://www.peru.edu , Thomas Edison State College http://www.tesc.edu There are many other online options. These are just examples. Hope this helps.

3
U of Phoenix is a good example of your NOT getting what you pay for. Employers have little or no respect for UP degrees as they don't take long to earn and the online instruction is not sufficient for fields like psychology. The disappointing news is that you can do nothing with a bachelor's degree in psychology and little with a master's anyway. You need a doctorate (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) to get a good job. Psychology is a profession which takes about eight years of study at least. If you don't have the time, pick a field with a shorter learning period. I hope you will look into this matter further and not waste a single dollar or hour on a useless degree from UP. You can't take short cuts when the mental health of other people is involved and every reputable mental health organization knows this. You literally have other people's lives in your hands. You goof up because of inadequate training and your client kills herself or himself. Then how will you feel? I'm sorry, but life is tough. Good luck!

4
What dope put all the Thumbs-Down here? While the University of Phoenix' programs may be as valid as any other in the primordial soup that calls itself "knowledge" in the field of Psychology -- the truth is that like the talismans handed out by the Wizard of Oz; the name on such documents means more in today's society than the substance of experience, or any real measure of quality for that matter. As Sandra Bullock's character said memorably in a satirical movie about some ersatz Futureworld: "Now, ALL restaurants are Pizza Hut". The point is, neither Freud or Jung had qualifications per se in the field, but the title of "expertise" is a prerequisite to legal practice these days. It's like an American drivers license. No indication of actually knowing how to drive -- but the piper must be paid. Get the "best" degree you can, and try to hold onto your dedication while you're at it.

I am attending UOP online for a bachelors in human resource managment. I know that UOP is not the most credible school nor is any other online school. The way that I see it is, for you and me, the only option we really have is online and it is better than nothing right? I am like you and live to far away to attend a brick and mortar college so online is the only real option. My plans are to get a bachelors with them and then get as many certifications as I can in my field such as PHR or SPHR. Don't you have to pass some sort of state test or something in order to get a license? That should speak for itself I would think. Also, you might consider how much competition you would have when applying for a job in your immediate area: is there an overwhelming amount of qaulified applicants or are there very minimal? If there are minimal, your degree will be more credible because you have minimal people able to fill the position, however, if you have a lot of competition, the people who graduated from top name schools will obviously win. I say figure out what is your best option. Email me if you would like me to answer some questions about UOP. mxracer10101@yahoo.com Hope this helped

6
I just started going for my bachelor's for teaching Elementary. I am sure that overall, it is not going to be the "BEST" way to go about it....just in general. I think online schools are thought of as easier or maybe even looked down on. If the person in charge of hiring you once you do graduate doesn't think it's adequate than what can you do right? I am a single Mother, and online school is my only option. I wish you the best.

7
I would recommend you try different schools for your bachelor's and masters programs. It will make you more rounded. There are several schools online that will make you well-rounded. It will be an easy search to find them. You should also start studying for your GRE about your Junior year. It's not required for most for-profits but it will keep your options open. BTW, licensing in psych is done at the state level. You'll want to ensure UoP meets those requirements before enrolling.

What kinda PhD? If you just do a plain research PhD then it takes 3 years. Generally they like some work experience in the field too. I've not heard of anyone needing to take an exam to do a PhD but I suppose it depends on the admissions procedure. You don't necessarily need to have a masters. If you mean a the D Clin Psych. . . well that's a whole different ball game. . . . ETA: i'm answering from the UK

You can complete this in 2 years. And you will have to take a state board exam to get certified. From state to state different rules may apply, so researching this is a must also.
