Does the Master has to be similar to the Bachelor

Does the Master has to be similar to the Bachelor ?
Hey, I am an Austrian student, studying in Milan and doing the Bachelor in "International economics and management" and I am finishing this summer. Directly afterwards I would like to do the Master in psychology!!! Do you know if it is it possible ? I already looked at some possible Universities but they all state, that I need at least a basic bachelor in psychology to do the Master in it. Would be really nice, if you could help me. Do you know any good Universities where it is possible to do it ? Is there any rule? Thank you very much in advance, m_riccabona

In the US, no, that wouldn't be possible. There are some masters programs you can enter with any major, but the sciences and engineering are not among them. To get a masters in psychology, you'd need significant coursework in psychology - they're not starting over at the beginning and those programs are very competitive to enter.

2
Sometimes schools will let you start graduate school in a subject that you did not take as an undergraduate if you first enter as a temporary non-degree graduate student and take all the necessary undergraduate pre-requisites. These courses will not count towards your graduate degree, but they will make you qualified to enter the graduate degree program. You will have to ask the universities if they would accept you under these conditions.

Where to find a psychology master/phd student to hire

Where to find a psychology master/phd student to hire?
I work for a company and we tried to hire a masters or phd student in psychology to design a serious of test that would meet the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing set by the APA. The local University (Las Vegas, NV) does would not allow us to mass e-mail their students, nor would they provide us with contact information. The work is to be done at home, and the pay is very reasonable (looking at making 1000+ dollars in a couple of weeks, with the ability to make more). I just don't know where to go to find psychology students.

Try placing an ad in the APA Monitor http://www.apa.org/monitor/ Edit -- This is even more on point. Advertise online and search others resumes & CV's: http://jobs.psyccareers.com/search.cfm

2
um call schools that have psychology at the school.

3
I was a grad student in psychology, and our graduate coordinator and one of our professors always emails us job openings. Maybe someone in the graduate department would be willing to email some students for you with a link to the opening?

4
You can post an ad at socialservice.com or the APA site? Check out studentdoctorforum.net (I think or google up student doctoral forum network), and go to the psychology section of the forum. You can post your ad there.

Masters in psychology or behavioral economics

Masters in psychology or behavioral economics?
I want to get a Master's in either psychology or behavioral economics (not a phD). Ideally, I want to start next fall. I have top scores and graduated from an ivy league school, but have no experience in psychology. What are the top programs I could look into?

You cant really get jobs with just a masters in psychology, you really need a phd unless you plan to work in a school one day (thats what I am doing myself right now as a educational specialist in psychology). I dont know much about the beh. economics- so cant speak to that, but that could be an issue as far as jobs and also pay.

Does it matter if I have only a Master degree in Counseling Psychology but not a Bachelor in Psychology also

Does it matter if I have only a Master degree in Counseling Psychology but not a Bachelor in Psychology also?
Let's say I graduate with Bachelor in Physics and decide to shift to Counseling Psychology and earn a Master degree in Counseling Psychology. Does it make any difference from the fact if I were to also have the Bachelor in Psychology? I mean do employers make any difference? Am I less prepared than a full rate graduate in my specific domain (ex. Counseling)? Is there any extra stuff I should do? Thanks for any help.

It don't matter to me in the least but you'd be lots better off with a degree in physics.

2
You can actually enter a Masters program in Psychology even though you did not have an AB/BS Psychology degree. However, you would have to make it up by taking the following courses: general psychology, fundamental statistics, and an introduction to psychological research course. If you are entering Counseling Psychology at the graduate level, you will be taking up advanced personality theories, appraisal techniques, abnormal psychology, and therapy/counseling courses. At the undergraduate level, you will be introduced to personality theories and psychological testing/assessment. Also, you get to sample different areas of psychology. Thus, being an "insider" can help. When it comes to employment, however, it's your actual skill and having good references that ultimately matters. As an "outsider", you have to do additional reading and find a good place to practice.

First, I must say that over the last three decades of practice in psychotherapy, I have had the pleasure of working with several very competent speech-language pathologists when we have shared patients. I'm assuming that your interest in a master's degree in psychology is related to the practice psychotherapy or counseling as a means of helping people work through their troubles. The focus of this work can be very broad and wide-ranging. Speech-language therapists focus on the essential skills of language expression and understanding. A thorough grounding in neuroanatomy and physiology is essential. Naturally, the patient's emotional and behavioral reaction to his or her language difficulty is a major consideration in his or her progress. There's plenty of overlap in the work of these two professions.

The most popular master's degrees lead to counseling positions. In California, you can get a Marriage, Family, Child (MFC) master's degree, subsequently become a practitioner if you pass the appropriate state exams and do an internship. A master's in Social Work (MSW) is perhaps a better choice for counseling, because you can be certified to practice in most states. You can then work in clinics or agencies, or even set up your own private practice. Another option is to obtain a general master's degree in psychology, and then try for a teaching position at a community college. Some research and teaching experience helps to get a position. Another education-related possibility is to obtain a school psychology master's. This provides the educational background to work in a school system as a school psychologist. There are other options, such as research psychology, sport psychology, health psychology, forensic psychology, industrial-organizational psychology, that can lead to job positions if you make the right connections. In my experience, however, the most common work options for those with a master's degree in psychology or a psychology-related field are in the fields of counseling and teaching. Whatever you do, take advantage of opportunities to get applied experience while an undergraduate, and find out first-hand what career options suit you best.

Wow ! A Master's degree in psychology! Congratulations. You can be a counsellor or teach psychology to Business management professionals. Or come to India. There are a whole lot of options here. With the proliferation of business management schools in India, you can try your luck here. In India , even students of visual communications study psychology for a semester. They study stuff like parent-adult-child ego, associative psychology and so on. I have read in Lee Iaccoca's autobiography that he studied psychology as part of his MBA. In big industrial houses, there are psychology teachers imparting training to existing engineers and managers and to fresh management trainees. Career counselling centres require people like you. You options are endless. Hope my limited knowledge has helped you. Regards, S.Suresh, Trichy,

2
Phhh, psychology? Is there even an entrance criteria for that degree? Make sure you spell your name right on the application, that will probably get you in.

3
Of course they'll accept non-majors. Many fields prefer you have a different undergrad major. Statistics is like blood group O: universally accepted.

4
It depends on the school. Some require that you have a BA in Psych, others don't care as long as you took the Psych subject test of the GRE. I'm in a Psych doctoral program right now and a colleague of mine has a BA in English. She found that it was more difficult because she hadn't learned the basics. However, many major theories will be repeated again and again in each class so you probably wont be that handicapped in that area. I would suggest that you consider taking an intro to Psych class just to get the basics.

5
it depend on the school which is you choose. Just check the school requirements, not all the school asking you the BA degree or experience work. hoping it's helpful :)

6
No, you don't. but it will definitely help you to take extra psych classes now. Otherwise if you do get into a graduate program you'll have to take extra classes to make up for the prerequisites you didn't take.

7
It does really depend on what schools you're applying to. Other factors generally weigh more importantly, I think, especially research experience and letters of rec. You might think about emailing faculty that you're interested in working with with a short query of your own research goals.

8
Depends on the program. There is a girl in my program now who majored in Performance Arts and worked as a professional opera singer. I would think that if your major was completely unrelated (like ceramics or computers or phys ed), than you might have problems. But since biology has so much to do with psychology, neurology, and psychopharmacology, I don't think that it is a long-shot.

3
It's mainly split between research, education/teaching, and clinical application in a number of areas. You often need a Ph.D. if you want to teach at college level or do research. If you want to use your education and training as a therapist/counselor or other clinician, you may be able to do it with a Masters Degree. The school that I attended, U. of No. Texas, has a number of departments that train people to do a variety of clinical jobs, for example: clinical psychologist (mostly testing) which requires a doctoral degree; school or agency counselor (therapist) which requires a masters degree. I would recommend that you talk to the school counseling department at your university or college to fill you in on the ins and outs of psychology disciplines.

PhD will give you access to a lot more jobs if you are interested in academia. PhD is harder to achieve so you will need to think long and hard before making that commitment. To the person above, it's spelled Freud, not Froid.

Grad school is very expensive. After you graduate, you will be able to work at a fast-food joint. You will either be flipping burgers or saying "Do you want fries with that?". I would pursue a more worthwhile career.

2
You can become an associate psychologist (basically a counselor) with just a masters. Your income will much less than that of a professionally licensed psychologist. Here in Texas, a licensed psychologist makes about $75k starting, and an associate psychologist is lucky to make $45k starting. My best advice is after you get your bachelors, enroll in a PH.D program. Do not enroll in a "terminal masters" program if you plan to get your PH.D. in the future. It's a tough road, but getting a PH.D. will give you far more options. I planned everything out for my wife when she began pursuing her psychology degree. Hope this helps.

3
I got a masters in psychology from Columbia University Teachers College. It was expensive, although the program was only one year long. With that degree, I got a job with the State of California doing forensic psychiatry research. My salary before I quit to go back to grad school to get my Ph.D was 70,000 USD per year. Quite a bit more money than a burger flipper, dont you think? There are many jobs you can get with a masters in psych. Many mid-level research jobs require a masters degree. Also, if you have statistics skills and experience, you can quite easily get a job in government. Many hospitals also hire psych people to do administrative stuff and data gathering (e.g., Kaiser).

It depends on the prerequisites the university or college puts on the course. You should be able to find out if your course requires a bachelor's degree in psychology by contacting the university or college who offers the course.

2
In order to get into a masters of psychology program, you would have fulfill certain prerequisite courses and other requirements required first to your desired master's degree. Also Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores are considered.

3
The universities I am familiar with require that you hold a bachelor's degree before being considered for a master's degree. However, there are some universities that offer an accelerated track, which means that you can get your bachelor's and your master's degrees in 5 years. This is usually a very attractive option if you are looking to get your master's only (and not a PhD), because you do not need to undergo a thorough application process again or take the General Record Exams.

you can do either. The key to getting in to a masters program will be why you are interested in the career and how your experiences (education, internship, and personal) have prepared you for it. G'day, Some may argue that the university belongs to The Group of 8 (www.go8.edu.au) are the 'famous' one. However they group was formed just to unify the promotional effort. The members cannot claim that they are the best at everything that they offers. There are only 42 (soon to be 43) universities in Australia, all of them are fully accredited and they are tightly regulated, therefore the quality and recognition of their graduates are equal from wherever university you are studying from. The most important thing is you have to READ the course information carefully, since some courses may have the same name but different content. I suggest you to go to the online database below. It can show you which universities offer the area of study and their website. Once visited the website, please make sure that you access the information for international students, since some requirements, application form and fees are different than Australians'. Once decided on the uni, fill in the application form and send it together with certified copy of your academic qualification. Depending on your country of origin, you may also need to submit an IELTS test results for proof of your English proficiency (www.ielts.org) Living cost... Sydney and Canberra have the highest living cost, followed by Melbourne & Brisbane, then Perth, Darwin, Adelaide & Tasmania the lowest. I am attaching a weblink from one of the uni in Melbourne as an indication. So with many options for your to choose, this is my suggestion to narrow down your choice: 1. Choose the city you want to study in. The consideration maybe the lifestyle, living cost and weather. 2. Find the area that you want to work/career in. Check if the uni's are offering the area. Hope this helps. Good luck for your study and welcome to Australia :)

There are plenty of schools out there that offer masters in psychology. First, you have to narrow down what you want your degree in. Developmental, organizational, cognitive, experimental, counseling, neurophysiology, etc. Once you know what field you want to study you can do a search for what schools offer which programs. You will probably need to take the GRE for admission to graduate school. Also since your major wasn't psychology in undergrad you will probably have to take some psychology classes to meet prerequisites for the graduate courses. The courses needed will vary depending on the program. You may want to look at the American Psychological Association web site (www.apa.org) for more information on the fields of psychology. They also have a division for psychology graduate students that you might find interesting.

With a Masters, you could become a Social Worker or a Licensed Therapist. To become a Psychologist, you would need to go for your PhD in Psychology.

2
If you get a masters in psychology you can become a psychologist as long as you take the ceritification exam. You do not need a bachelors in psych to get your masters. And as far as your history degree goes, to be honest I really don't know what other kind of job you can get with a B.A. in history.

3
You can go on and get your masters in psychology. You do not need to have a BA it to get a grad degree. Just need to meet the requirements of the school you are attending for your masters. I don't know of any jobs that you can get specifically designed for a BA in history. (Many employers want someone with a BA, though) You cannot usually teach with just a BA, either, you would need a teaching credential.

4
OK, in most state you cannot become a therapist with just a masters in psychology, you need a masters in social work (go figure.) Here are the routes to take if you want to be a therapist: MASTERS LEVEL: BS or BA in any liberal arts degree Masters in Social Work (60 credits, 2 years full time) Take the state test, become an LMSW (licensed) and you can be a therapist working at a clinic, hospital, group, etc. under supervision by an LCSW or Psychologist. Three years of clinical experience and a test later, you can become an LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker) and 3 years after that, you can apply for the R designation (reimbursement) LCSW-R and have a private practice. That's the fastest way to be a therapist - 2 years post BA or BS. For your own practice -6 years experience post grad (at least in my state, NY) If you want to become a psychologist, you will need a Phd. or a PsyD. The Phd. is more research oriented, the PsyD. is more clinical, and is usually a little shorter. You're looking at 4-6 years on these, sometimes more. You do not need a masters degree before taking a Phd. degree, you can apply with a bachelors degree. Think about what you want to do with the degree - if you want to be a therapist, you don't need the Phd. or PsyD. Most psychologists I know do psychological testing, not counseling. They send the counseling to the MSWs. Good luck!

Many schools let you get a masters w/o a undergrad in psych. But normally you have to have certian classes. So check and see. If they do, then do that during the summer. Just call and talk to uni's

should really ask your guidance counselor

2
You would definitely need biology and chemistry. You would need to check with your prospective college (which you haven't discovered yet) to see if physics was also an entry level requirement. You would get a BS in psychology then go on for a masters in psychology focusing on counseling. Depending upon the type of psychology you want to practice and where you live, you could either stop at an MS or you might need a PhD. If you wanted to be able to diagnose, I believe in most places, you have to have that PhD. Plan to spend a minimum of 7 years in college (BS + MS). Longer if you need the PhD. Sorry, can't help you with colleges in Canada.

3
Though things might be different in Canada, in most US states one can be a counselor with an MA in Counseling while a PhD in Psychology or the PsyD would usually be required to become a psychologist. An American would look up the website of their State Board of Psychology or their State Board of Counseling to find specific requirements for sitting for the professional licensure exams. You would need to find out whether Canada regulates entry into the mental health professions at the federal level or at the provincial level. Another thing you might do is start surfing the web to various Canadian colleges and universities with psychology departments and find out their admissions requirements. You've got a long road ahead of you. Good luck! EDIT: Yes, going to the guidance counselor's office would be out of the question because of summer break. You might, however, ask your Mom & Dad if any of their friends are guidance counselors (or counseling psychologists). Are you near a college or university? If so, their guidance & counseling offices will probably still be open for the summer.

What are the GPA requirements for psychology graduate schools (Master's degree) for clinical and counseling

What are the GPA requirements for psychology graduate schools (Master's degree) for clinical and counseling?
I'm looking for the average GPA requirements needed in order to be accepted into graduate programs for Master's Degrees in clinical and counseling psychology. It's not as important, but knowing the GPA requirements for acceptance into doctoral degree programs for clinical and counseling psychology would both be great too. Thanks.

Each program has different requirements and admission is not guaranteed even if you meet the required GPA. You are competing for a spot with a pool of applicants. Graduate admissions typically calculate a score for each applicant based upon his or her GPa and GRE score. A common formula is to multiple the GPA by 100 or 200 and add half of the GRE score for the quantitative and verbal sections. They then rank each applicant by score and reject those with a score below a set number and then review the remaining applicant's applications. After that it gets a little foggy and factors such as references, research experience, interviews, and purpose statements all factor in differently; not only from program to program, but year to year. For most master's programs, a GPA of 3.4 will make you fairly completive, but anything below 3.25 will likely get a rejection letter; at least in clinical. For a doctoral program, I would not bother if your GPA is below 3.5. Most of those accepted have around a 3.7 GPA with GRE scores of 1200+ and research experience. But I will tell you at long shot admission story. I had a professor who went to graduate school to dodge the draft during Vietnam and he got into a good state school with a 2.85 GPA, but his GRE scores were 750+ on each section. So it isn't only about GPA. Best of Luck

psychology majors do not offer alot of money and are very hard to get jobs. maybe 40-60k. i assume you were thinking of being a psychiatrist and making like 200k/year but that field is a specialized medical profession which you have to go to med school for.

2
what do you want to do? that is the question. with a bachelor's you dont have much freedom, but with a masters in clinical psych you can get licensed as a counselor and practice how you choose.

3
In the past school psychology was a field that was looking for people so there wasn't a ton of competition for jobs, which meant they were being somewhat well paid. I'm not sure if that's true anymore. You may want to go to your college's career and placement department and do some research on this before you go too far down that path. I was a psychology major. My area of interest was Industrial/Organizational (IO) psychology. I started out in HR, but when the economy got tough, I ended up in a job that is not related to psychology.

4
School psychology is a nationwide area of critical shortage. Research suggests that in the next 10-15 years there will be way more jobs than there will be people graduating from graduate programs in school psychology, so you will be able to find a job once you graduate. I believe the last data that I saw put the median salary for school psychologists to be around $50 K a year (this was published back in 2000 by the National Association of School Psychologists, so it's probably outdated). As for me, I have my Ed.S. degree is school psychology (above a Masters, lower and a Doctorate). I am in my third year and I'll make about $54 K this year working an 11 month (220 day) contract. I get pension, medical, health, and vision benfits as well, along with 2 weeks off for winter break and a week off for spring break. People with just a Masters get paid a little less, people with a Doctorate get paid a little more (usually $1,000-$2,000 a year difference in each direction, but it varies from district to district). Of course, districts pay more than others, so you have to consider that when looking at your opportunities (sometimes this is because they offer 10 month contracts or 12 month contracts. Obviously the more you work, the more money you'll make). Some states, such as Florida, offer tuition reimbursement/loan forgiveness as well. I've gotten $1,800 from it thus far, and the max I can get from it is $10 K. Of course you could get licensed and either do some work on the side or open up your own practice, so that may adjust your income some more. As far as working with a bachelor's in psychology, you're unlikely to find work within the field with just a bachelor's. You need at least a masters, although if you're looking at school psychology you should consider the Ed.S. degree, since most people graduating from programs are currently getting those degrees. If you have any more questions, feel free to contact me through my profile. I hope this helps!

It depends on your career goals and where you live. If you want to be a Psychologist, and you want to provide therapy for others, and you live in the United States, then you typically need a Ph.D. in either Clinical, Counselling, or School Psychology. With a master's-level degree in one of those fields, you can be a licensed counselor (but technically a 'Psychologist'). For a bachelor's degree, one typically must be accepted into a university, then accepted into the psychology program, then qualify for a Bachelor's degree. For the Bachelor's degree, required classes would include Statistics, Research Design, Intro to Psych, Abnormal Psych, and other psychology courses, depending on the program. Good Luck!

For both, probably $20s-30s. If you're trying to decide between them, the MSW is best if you're *sure* you won't go on to get the PhD in psych.

2
Do you mean Social Work? There is no degree in social working. An MA in psych with a licensed professional counselor credential will net you between 20-40K without probably in the 20-30K range.

You don't indicate if you are looking for a PhD in Hong Kong or the US. In general I would say the changes of getting into a PhD program with a 2.5 GPA are very remote. 3.0 is generally considered the minimum and realistically a 3.5 is the true mean. Now taking a different MA (especially in psychology) and doing well in this (e.g. getting above a 3.5 GPA) would probably help - you don't indicate what your BA GPA was. If you do this, you should understand WHY you got a 2.5 GPA and what you can do to avoid the same problems in your second MA. As for a good job - provided you are skilled and talented you should be able to get a good job with a PhD. DA

I don't know about retaking the course but your almost guaranteed a great job.

No real difference. Different schools or different departments that house the psych program, most likely. FWIW, the master's in psych won't get you too far unless you're headed for a PhD.

2
That depends. My university you could ask for either qualification, it's one of those border subjects like maths which sit between the classic arts and the sciences. I would disagree with Lana about the value of the course. There are bragging rights (not to be sniffed at), it also shows you are capable of doing a higher degree than bachelors, which can stand you in good stead in any occupation.

Yes. I had a BA in English and now I am working on a MA in Psychology. You need to find a program and see what classes are a prerequisite for the program. Take those classes and start your MA in Psy.

2
Yes, you can definitely pursue a masters or PhD in psychology with a degree in philosophy. In fact, depending on your particular interests in philosophy (e.g. consciousness, mental causation, motivation, etc.) it can be very complementary to graduate study in psychology. One thing you should keep in mind, however, is that graduate programs in psychology often require you to take an exam that demonstrates a broad understanding of issues in psychology-- much of which will not be covered during the course of your philosophy degree. You might simply have to study for this exam a little more than those who majored in psychology.

I don't know much about this stuff but all I can tell is that if you take Masters in Criminal justice then you'd have an easy time adjusting to the curriculum and if you that psychology there is a lot of work there. but in the end you should choose what you like not think of the money.. as you can make money in both and a lot and would be helping some tainted souls.. but.. yeah.. all I'm saying is that.. you should make your choice on you accordance and not compromise. .. Well best of luck..

A MA in Psychology does not allow you to practice psychology independently. That requires a PhD. With a Master's in Psychology, you generally work under the supervision of a psychologist or in a setting other than counseling.

Yes, you need a minimum number of credits in psychology to attend grad school in psychology - usually more than a minor, so a major is recommended. Psychology grad programs are very competitive, so you'll need to take the required classes to have a shot at getting in.

In some states you can practice as a psychologist with a Master's degree and after you pass the required licensing exams. Here is the website that will tell you what states you can practice in. http://www.enamp.org/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=4

6
You can become a psychotherapist. Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapy and in some cases (but that's mostly with social work track MA degree) you can become Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Making sure that the licensing board in your state recognizes the degree is essential though.

In the health care market of the near future (i.e., when you would be practicing), a master's degree will likely be both more versatile and more readily reimbursable than a doctoral degree. Obama is planning to socialize medicine in the USA. Socialized medicine, of course, necessitates rationing of health care services. In other countries, this has historically meant that services end up being provided by practitioners who can independently provide the treatment for the lowest price. For psychotherapy in the USA, that will fall to the master's level practitioner. This will be true, however, only if Obama's plan actually covers psychotherapy as we practice it today. There is ample evidence to suggest that Obama's plan will provide coverage only for "serious mental illness" (i.e., SMI). SMI generally includes disorders in the psychotic spectrum (e.g., schizophrenia) and/or those treated largely (or solely) with medications. If it does come to pass that Obama's plan covers only SMI, then that is a game changer. That means that the field will revert back to its initial days, when psychiatrists (i.e., M.D.s) ruled the roost, and only the very, very wealthy could afford psychotherapy. Psychotherapy as we know it today, will be on a self-pay basis. The potential upside to this scenario for psychologists, is that there is a movement underway to secure prescription privileges for psychologists. Legislation has already passed in two states (i.e., LA and NM), and is pending in several others. In this scenario, psychologists who have the prerequisite training to provide prescriptions will become the most sought after practitioners, because they can be paid at a lower rate to provide services identical to those of psychiatrists Ii.e., writing scripts for anti-psychotics covered under Obama's plan). Even prior to the implementation of socialized medicine (which would spell disaster for the field, by the way), however, you would be able to practice independently in every state at the master's level. Rates of reimbursement vary considerably, and depend on whether or not (and with whom) you are contracted by behavioral health managed care organizations. Best of luck to you in your future educational and vocational endeavors, ~Dr. B.~

Can I Switch Fields With My Psychology Master's Degree

Can I Switch Fields With My Psychology Master's Degree?
I will be receiving a Master's Degree in Psychology soon (I also have a Psy B.A.). Despite the degree, I am strongly thinking about leaving the field. I am interested in continuing my education in a different field. However, the thought of getting another B.A. is a bit daunting. I was wondering if it'd be possible to apply for a non-Psychology Master's program without having a B.A. in that field? I'm thinking mostly about History or American Studies, but other Social Sciences are possibilities too. And if it's possible, what fields could I get into?

You could get into the corn field. Didn't you hear about the farmer who was just Outstanding in his field? Basically I would think that if you have enough prerequisites in your new chosen area of study then you can just pick up at a certain point, however Universities have differing qualifiers concerning Masters programs so you should first decide where you want to attend study and then proceed to qualify for the program.

3
It is possible to get into an M.A. program without a B.A. in the field of concentration. My Bachelors is in Biopsych and I have a Masters in Linguistics. A background in a Liberal Arts discipline can better prepare you for further study in other social science concentrations than it can for more technical fields of study, such as computer science. The great thing about liberal arts disciplines is that they prepare you well for Thinking, Analyzing, Interpreting, Researching, Rhetoric & Communications, etc. - and this world needs more people who can do that effectively. With these skills you can do all sorts of interesting things.

With forensic psychology you can help the government and / or your regional, state, or local forensic examiners. It is a very tight field and what I mean is that not many people in the world are forensic psychologists. There are not many job opportunities for this field but if you do find one, it may pack a high salary! A counseling major is the opposite. Not much with the government. With counseling I expect most jobs to be in schools or psycho-wards. Many people may have this degree so the demand may not be that high. Which means that the salary may not be that high. But a job in this field may be much easier to find that one with forensic psychology. In the end, it's your call. Good luck with the career you choose!

University of Phoenix, and Kaplan University both offer online psychology degrees which are accredited by the North American Association- The same as most major universities.

2
There are no fully accredited graduate-level Internet programs in psychology that I know of in the USA. Which means that whatever useless degree you get from them will not be enough for you to be licensed or certified in your state of residence, and therefore you will not be able to practice any kind of counseling or psychotherapy. I would not want you to be led astray by the person who said, "University of Phoenix, and Kaplan University both offer on line psychology degrees which are accredited by the North American Association- The same as most major universities." The fact is, the only "North American Association" that accredits on-line programs is the one that specifically states it is to accredit only those programs that do not meet the minimum guidelines of actual accrediting agencies. This bogus outfit is NOT the same as those who accredit major universities. Your best bet is to enroll in a legitimate program at a legitimate university. A masters degree in psychology is likely to take two full years.

Well, your question has been up here for 3 hours with no answers. I don't know, either, but I didn't want you to feel unloved. Here in the Americas, just about all the universities are engaged in the mad dash to get their courses on-line. Those first ones are REALLY hard to get going and promoted, especially in countries like Ecuador that is better known for educational inequality than full literacy. Given your mature background, you might be an excellent candidate to help a Bangalore university make that leap.

Do you agree that in order to truly master psychology one must be able to control people, absolutely

Do you agree that in order to truly master psychology one must be able to control people, absolutely?
The purpose of psychology is to understand how the human brain works. To truly master anything is not just to understand the concepts and theories, but to actually apply them. Applied psychology uses persuasion and knowledge to achieve a goal, whatever that may be. What do you think psychologists actually do? (or any profession in psychology anyways) Whenever you guide someone to their destination, you are manipulating them. You're telling them where to go, to get where they need to be. It's a form of voluntary control. Psychology is not about healing, though it may be use for healing. That's like saying mathematics is about designing technology.

No, not really, there are many other gifts that people have and master Psychology. It is not the only one. Plus it is not really necessary. I hope this answers your question.

2
To master any discipline requires, at the very least, mastering that discipline's concepts. There is no relation between mastering psychology and controlling people. You only think this because you assume that psychology is about controlling people--and that's not even in the ballpark. Your question demonstrates that you have no idea what you are talking about.

3
Yes, I do agree. Psychology is understanding personality and how the mind reacts in certain situations. Therefore for someone to TRULY master psychology, they must be able to completely understand what a person would do in a situation and how they would react causing them to be able to control them

4
No,You truly need to understand yourself. You can never control other people,You may think you do but you really can't.

5
wishing to be in a position which involves controlling people absolutely sounds more than faintly like the desire of someone who truly needs counseling, rather than one who can offer competent help. some of my friends are wonderful therapists, and their focus seems to be more on compassion and the application of various therapeutic techniques, both eastern and western, none of which involve "controlling" the client. rather , among other modalities, they involve helping the client to become more conscious/aware of his/her patterns, issues, and projections. and, to practice, personally, those techniques which aid in quieting the mind and calming the self, generally.

6
The science of Psychology is to understand the many aspects of the human mind. The Art of Therapy is to help guide the client to their own solutions. Mind control doesn't fit in this equation.

7
Yes Agree Fully, One must posses the ability to gain control over a persons Brain and Body but that too up to a limited area, distance, period not full fledge.

8
Psychology is about understanding, insight, and healing. While modulation and self control is part of the healing process, it is not for the therapist or psychologist to exert control of people. There are those therapists that do see their role as ring master, but real healing comes from the individual. The knowledge gained from psychology guides the person away from the hurt to a more fulfilled and fruitful life. Psychology is more about healing than control. The Psychologist holds no control over another. They just have objective insight to facilitate a new path. If you want to control people join the police department.

Don't worry about not having a BA in psych. My wife has a Master's in psych and she had a BA in dental hygiene. You need to demonstrate that you are an intelligent person who did well in your classes. If you have life and/or work experience in which you worked with people that would be good to highlight. You'll have to learn about the brain and the nervous system, so any background there would be good. Don't let the English background stop you. You know how to write, you know how to think carefully about a topic before you begin writing. Doing research and writing reports for publication in psychology journals is an important part of being a psychologist. Emphasize your skills in those areas. Michael http://www.thepsychfiles.com

Are you serious? I'm the opposite! I have a masters in psych but now I want to get my doc in English! Crazy! Yes, you still can. There was a girl in my grad school who had an english degree but was accepted to the psych masters program. It can happen, but isn't guaranteed. The extraneous variable is the competition (other applicants) since grad schools for psych are usually very competitive. You'll be competing against other applicants, most of whom will have extensive backgrounds in psychology, therefore they will be more suited for acceptance than you, but yeah you definitey have a shot.

hi, you don't need a masters degree in psych to be a school counselor. different universities will call the degree different things, but you need a masters in education with specialization in counseling. that's what they call it at my university.

Whether or not you have a good job or any job at all! Of course a doctorate is better. It takes much longer to get and the work is much more difficult. A doctorate is the standard professional degree in psychology and will open every door for you. You can easily earn 150-200K or more. Getting just a masters is not a good idea. You will always have much worse jobs than people with doctorates and will not feel good about your situation as you will be a "second class citizen" in your profession.

After you finish a four year program with a degree in Psychology, you will then go on and take another 36 credits and then you will earn a Master's degree in Psychology. If you then are not sick of studying this topic and want a particular job that would require a Doctoral degree you could pursue a Doctorate which requires more study and a research project and what is called a Doctoral Thesis. You then have to defend your research to a group of experts to get the degree, My recommendation to you is to spend all the time that you can reading about everything that you can so that you can pick up these commonly known things. Getting a good basic education is the most important thing at this point in your life.

Almost all areas of specialization in psychology requires a doctorate degree. For this reason, you can get more high-paying jobs when you have PhD compared to a master's degree.

Its pretty difficult- To give you an idea, I had a 3.3, with a gre- 560q,480v,5.5w and didnt get into any of the 10 schools I applied to (and I wasnt applying to anything too difficult- even applied to Western Kentucky University). I had several research opportunities, did a senior honors thesis which ended up being published, excellent letters of rec etc. To get in, you really need a 3.6+ with a gre combined q/v of around 1200+. It does depend on what you apply for though. IE-clinical is harder- but you need a phd to do anything with it as masters isnt recognized. MFT is usually housed in the social work department, thus, its easier to get in. (Thats what I ended up doing, going into clinical social work- all pays the same when you get done, but I still later went after a phd in school psychology- which is where I am now.) Counseling- that depends on what you want to do- school counseling is easier as its housed in the education department, but clinical counseling is the middle ground- harder than mft but easier than clinical itself. Hope that helps.
